Best Flooring for Homes with Pets in NJ: A Contractor’s Guide (2026)

New Jersey is one of the most pet-friendly states in the country, with millions of households sharing their homes with dogs, cats, and other animals. If you’re a pet owner planning a flooring project, you already know the challenge: you want a floor that looks beautiful, holds up to claws and accidents, and doesn’t trap pet hair and dander.

As a flooring contractor serving Long Branch, Monmouth County, and all of New Jersey, IAC Home Improvement has installed flooring in hundreds of pet-owner homes. This guide shares what we’ve learned about which flooring options truly hold up — and which ones don’t.

The 4 Key Factors for Pet-Friendly Flooring

Before comparing specific flooring types, understand the four properties that matter most in a home with pets:

  1. Scratch resistance: Dog nails — especially large breeds — can scratch soft flooring surfaces. Look for hardness ratings (Janka scale for hardwood, AC rating for laminate/vinyl).
  2. Waterproofing: Accidents happen. Flooring that absorbs moisture will warp, stain, and develop odors. Waterproof flooring is essential for pet owners.
  3. Ease of cleaning: Pet hair, dander, and tracked-in mud should be easy to sweep, mop, or vacuum. Smooth surfaces win here.
  4. Comfort: Hard surfaces can be tough on older dogs’ joints. Some flooring options are softer and warmer underfoot.

Best Flooring Options for Pet Owners in NJ

1. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) — Our Top Recommendation

Luxury vinyl plank is the best all-around flooring choice for NJ homeowners with pets, and it’s our most frequently installed flooring in pet-owner homes. Here’s why:

  • 100% waterproof: LVP is completely impervious to moisture. Dog accidents, spilled water bowls, and muddy paws won’t damage the floor.
  • Scratch resistant: Quality LVP (AC4 or AC5 rating) resists scratches from dog nails far better than hardwood or laminate.
  • Easy to clean: Smooth surface makes sweeping and mopping effortless. Pet hair doesn’t get trapped.
  • Comfortable: LVP has a slight give underfoot and is warmer than tile, making it comfortable for pets to lie on.
  • Realistic appearance: Modern LVP looks virtually identical to real hardwood, with embossed textures and realistic grain patterns.
  • Cost: $3–$7 per square foot installed in NJ (2026)

Best LVP brands for pet owners: Shaw Floorté, COREtec, LifeProof (Home Depot), Pergo Extreme

2. Porcelain Tile — Most Durable Option

Porcelain tile is the most durable flooring option available, and it’s completely waterproof and scratch-proof. It’s an excellent choice for high-traffic areas, mudrooms, and anywhere pets frequently enter from outside.

  • Pros: Completely waterproof, scratch-proof, easy to clean, extremely durable, cool in summer
  • Cons: Hard and cold underfoot (not ideal for pets with joint issues), can be slippery when wet, grout lines can trap dirt
  • Cost: $6–$14 per square foot installed in NJ

Pro tip: Choose a tile with a textured or matte finish for better traction — important for both pets and people. Use epoxy grout, which resists staining and is easier to clean than standard grout.

3. Hardwood Flooring — Beautiful but Requires Care

Hardwood flooring is the most desired flooring type among NJ homeowners, but it requires more consideration in pet households. The key variables are wood species hardness and finish type.

Best hardwood species for pet owners (by Janka hardness):

  • Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba): 2,350 — Extremely hard, excellent scratch resistance
  • Hickory: 1,820 — Very hard, great for active households
  • White Oak: 1,360 — Popular choice, good durability, refinishable
  • Hard Maple: 1,450 — Dense and durable
  • Avoid: Pine (870), American Cherry (995) — too soft for heavy pet traffic

The refinishing advantage: One major benefit of hardwood over vinyl or tile is that it can be sanded and refinished. If your hardwood develops significant scratches over the years, IAC Home Improvement can sand and refinish the floors to like-new condition — typically for $3–$5 per square foot.

  • Cost: $8–$14 per square foot installed in NJ
  • Waterproof? No — hardwood will warp if exposed to standing water or repeated accidents

4. Laminate Flooring — Budget-Friendly but Limited

Laminate flooring is a cost-effective alternative to hardwood, but it has significant limitations for pet owners. Most laminate is not waterproof — it has a water-resistant top layer, but the core will swell and warp if moisture penetrates the seams.

  • Pros: Affordable ($2–$5/sqft installed), scratch-resistant surface, wood-look appearance
  • Cons: Not waterproof, cannot be refinished, hollow sound underfoot
  • Best for: Low-traffic areas, homes with small pets, or budget-conscious projects

If you choose laminate: Look for AC4 or AC5 rated products and use a quality underlayment with a moisture barrier.

5. Carpet — Not Recommended for Pet Owners

We generally advise against carpet in homes with pets, especially dogs. Carpet absorbs pet urine deeply into the padding and subfloor, creating permanent odors that are nearly impossible to eliminate. It also traps pet dander (a major allergen), holds pet hair, and shows stains easily.

If you prefer the softness of carpet in bedrooms, consider a low-pile, stain-resistant option (like SmartStrand or PetProtect) and keep pets out of carpeted rooms when possible.

Our Recommendation by Pet Type

Large dogs (Labs, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers): Luxury vinyl plank or porcelain tile. These breeds are heavy, active, and have nails that will scratch softer surfaces. LVP is our top pick for its combination of durability, waterproofing, and comfort.

Small dogs: LVP, hardwood (hard species), or tile. Small dogs are easier on floors, giving you more options. If you love the look of hardwood, a harder species like hickory or white oak will hold up well.

Cats: Most flooring types work well with cats. Cats’ nails are retractable and less damaging than dogs’. The main concern is hairballs and litter tracking — smooth surfaces (LVP, tile, hardwood) are easiest to clean.

Multiple pets: LVP or tile, no exceptions. Multiple pets mean more accidents, more scratching, and more wear. Don’t risk hardwood or laminate.
